172. Wish they'd realized they could have been bipartisan with the GOP myths.
Rather than being bipartisan with these modern twisted Republicans, I wish my Democrats had been bipartisan with the Republican myths instead. The myths many people like to believe about them --

i.e., Republicans used to be fiscally responsible. We'll be bipartisan with that tradition and introduce some competition into the medical insurance business with a strong public option. Fiscally responsible Republicans would understand that tax cuts for the middle and lower classes are spent immediately and stimulate economies all across the country. They wouldn't shun the facts that tax cuts for the top 5% are invested in adding to their own strategic cash reserves of millions of dollars. Many of those old-fashioned fiscally responsible Republicans voted Democratic in 2008. They knew our economy was way out of balance and counted on the Democrats to increase the buying power of the 90% to keep our economies afloat after the frenzied crash of high finance. Let's be bipartisan with them.

Republicans had a few ounces of compassion from time to time. Some of them teamed up with Ted Kennedy to help the poor and infirm. If nothing else, you could get them aboard with shaming-- how could this be happening in the richest country on earth? Let's be bipartisan with those who seemed concerned about providing a basic level of compassion, whether they're currently serving in Congress or not.

Republicans used to claim to be strong on defense. But they let millions be wasted on war profiteering and never caught bin Laden. Still, let's be strong on defense in bipartisanship with Republicans who sought to avoid war at all costs, and use our tax dollars more strategically. Maybe we can get by with 5 intelligence/national security agencies, not 19.

Some Republicans realized that environmental and safety regulations evened the playing field for all businesses, requiring basic compliance standards from all, rather than making it a voluntary thing that needed justification on their balance sheets, to be pushed aside when profits slipped a bit. Some Republicans seemed to care about leaving a cleaner environment for their grandchildren, so let's be bipartisan with them.
