secure the region before someone else did, like the Russians eg. We now have military bases in the 'stan countries north of Afghanistan. The last big oil resources are supposed to be in the Caspian Sea. I remember reading an article in the NYT a few years before 9/11 which detailed maps of the Caspian Sea and what it would take for the U.S. to get there. We aren't the only ones trying. If it turns out that the speculation is not true, it will all have been for nothing.

And Unocal wanted to build a pipeline through Afghanistan in the 'nineties. The Taliban refused during the summer of 2001. Invading Afghanistan was 'on the table' long before 9/11. Either Bin Laden played into OUR hands and the U.S. was just incredibly lucky or there is something else we do not know.
