8. Southward
migration. Old folks like me are moving to the cheap housing and low income taxes of the south. They're leaving behind expensive housing (Boston, New York) and high taxes to go and leach off southern states and spend out our social security. Plus, it's warmer in the south - retirees like warm weather. Also, southern states are aggressively luring corporate investment by promising corporate tax breaks and a big pool of labor willing to work for less than those in the "blue" northern states. Low cost of housing makes low pay a no-brainer for a corporation. They're also promising low environmental and worker safety regulation. Corporations like that. Then, people who are desperate for employment go to where the jobs are.
