The Arizona Republic



State Sen. Jack Harper wants Gov. Jan Brewer to call lawmakers into a special session so they can authorize the creation of an armed volunteer force to patrol the border.

In an early version of Harper's plan, legislators would be "exempted" from volunteer duty. The opposite should be true. The governor should be required to lead Arizona troops, and all lawmakers should be required to serve.

Then, after our elected officials are forced to abandon the Capitol (where laws are made) and head for the border, the rest of us could focus on ensuring a bright future for Arizona by answering one all-important question:

How can we keep them there?
