63. Pay as you go doesn't work too well

Stretching out college to 6-8 years and trying to work during the period is generally a recipe for not completing it. Trying to balance both work and school as well as a lacking funding are two of the biggest reasons people drop out and do not complete their degree.

And education is something we are all responsible for. More education is almost universally better both individually and collectively, and however you can fund it (via your own funds, family funds, public funds) should be on the table. I funded mine with all 3 sources.

You condemn people for going into debt to pay for college, but condemn getting help from family. So how do people go to college? Wait until they are 30, then take 10 years to do it? The dropout rate for people who do that is far higher than people who devote themselves to education over a 4-5 year period.

Besides, if you have a society with everyone getting a degree in their late 30s (vs early 20s) that means they lost about 15+ years in their chosen career. Years they could've spent gaining experience had they had a degree at age 22-23.
