The GOP are masters of negative attacks and it's gotten them a lot. Without that they would have died out ages ago. We just went through a year of trashing healthcare with NO JUSTIFICATION WHATSOEVER yet they've had the country in paranoid hysterics for months. Now the Democratic Party's favorability ratings are lower than ever. Negative attacks aren't the way, are counterproductive, etc. etc. BUT THEY WORK. Why didn't Kerry win? Because he got swiftboated.
