A terrible what if: What if the repubs countered with single payer?

I have heard ill informed righties argue that elements of single payer, and strong public option would be superior. Sure they didnt REALLY know what they were saying. Still, is it remotely possible, that the replace portion of the repub repeal and replace, is strong? What would happen if they did?
