Wikipedia has a page on Milgram and another page which describes his famous "Milgram Experiment".
The Milgram experiment was designed to find out how far people will obey authority figures if commanded to inflict pain or injury on another person. The experiment demonstrated that most people will inflict painful and injurious actions on another if ordered to. A chilling read.
