One could just as easily correlate it to racism.

Utah is more religious than the Southern states and they have a solid IQ and high charity giving.

Problem is the way racism and xenophobism is used to manipulate the population of the Southern Conservative states to continually vote for abhorrent fascist Republicans who support oppressing the poor and promoting the upper class. They use the few wedge issues they have to elect candidates who actively work against the economic interest of their constituents.

It's the scare factor. They're simply easier to scare in to action, even when that action is against their interest.
