Jimmy Carter unwittingly helped the GOP, and the DLC

His deregulation of the industries, waffling on the abortion issue and the Equal Rights Amendment, and other poor decisions ultimately led to Ted Kennedy challenging him in the 1980 Democratic primary.

Carter was a typical Southern Democrat-fairly conservative and hawkish.

After McGovern's defeat in 1972 and Mondale's defeat in 1984-both landslide defeats-the Democratic Party was taken over by corporatists. And Carter, as good a man he is, unfortunately helped the DLC and the GOP.
