(KTVI - -- Police confirm that a shooting occurred about five miles from Columbia, Missouri campus. A spokesperson for UM said the shooting was between two vehicles. Two schools were placed on lockdown. Police said one person was shot in the head.

Update: 4:04 p.m.
Statement from University of Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. - This is a notification from University of Missouri-Columbia Police that a shooting occurred in the proximity of Grindstone Parkway and Bearfield Road earlier this afternoon in southeast Columbia. Both cars involved in the shooting have been located. In response to those who have made inquiries, the shooting did not occur on campus. The Columbia Police Department is in charge of the case.

Update 3:59 p.m.

According to the Columbia Tribune online, the shooting prompted two local schools to go under temporary lockdown.

According to the online paper, the gunfire was exchanged between two vehicles in the area of Grindstone Parkway and Bearfield Road.

Update 3: 50 p.m.

Police in Columbia, Missouri say one person has been shot in the head within the city limits. The shooting happened near the University of Missouri campus Wednesday afternoon.

Police did not give any additional information, but say that four people have been detained.
Update 3:45 p.m.

The Columbia Missourian web site is reporting that two people were shot near University of Missouri at Columbia's Reactor Field Wednesday morning.
