54. Even if you could, you don't want to use a debit card
If you read the fine print on your rental agreement, you agree to liability for any and all damage to the car if you don't sign up for the rental car companies overpriced insurance. So you might think, hey my regular insurance covers me, so I'll decline. The only problem is the rental car company will charge your card immediately for any damages and won't wait for the claim to go through. I can tell you this from experience. I had a windshield crack smaller than a dime once (which I think was there before I picked up the car). They charged my card for a whole new windshield to the tune of $400 (and I'm sure they only had it repaired). If you use your debit card they can wipe your checking account out and you have no recourse other than wait for your insurance company to process the claim and the rental car company doesn't give a shit about cooperating. That's why I carry a credit card with a $500 limit. If the rental car tries to screw me, they won't get very much.
