Copyrights have been lengthened numerous times...all so the Rat doesn't go into the public domain. Copyright terms are now life plus seventy, when they used to be a much more reasonable fifty-six years.

Furthermore, in spite of the fact that the rich often preach about the sanctity of intellecual property (most notably the obscenely rich entertainment industry), they surely don't think that way. Wholesale theft of ideas is not uncommon in that business. Original creators of content often get royally screwed over by the rich in the business when it comes to royalty payments. And don't even get me started on patents...all you need to do is go read the story of Robert Kearns and the Big Three automakers.
