..glib, one word answer based on a simple biological/evolutionary understanding of the human species: Reproduce.


Deeper answer: Let's leave God out of this for a second and presume we are no more than sacks of DNA whose main purpose is to pass on more DNA. Even were this to be the case we have the unique, and uniquely problematic ability to comprehend this. This comprehension is really what sets us apart from the rest of 'creation'. Ergo, our reason for 'being', should we need to find one more elaborate than 'survive and pass on your genes', should honor this distinction. I've settled on two things that aspire to justify the consciousness I've been given: "to learn and to teach". The exact substantive content of this mission of discovery is irrelevant. Find something you enjoy and learn more about it. If you get bored change subjects. When the opportunity arises and you find someone else on a similar journey who might benefit from what you know: teach. Never cease the former and don't be so modest that you shy away from the latter. The great thing about this is through your effort, no matter how humble, you are contributing to something bigger than any of us, the accumulation and transmission of knowledge. Who knows where it could lead.
