40. Yes, a lot of people in that part of the country in those days grew up with a
pretty deep hatred of a lot of things. It's still an ugly place in many ways, I think, but people should understand the hate was really on the murder level then. Murder still happens, as recent memory recalls, but I don't think it has quite the social acceptance it did then.

By the way, my friend, like many other people from Oklahoma, grew up to be a wonderfully kind and creative individual. So did Woody Guthrie. But any understanding of this country requires, I think, an understanding that (a) some of it ain't too damn pretty and (b) today's theatrics are ugly, but not on the level of, say, lynchings, McCarthyism, hatred and violence over integration in the '60's, . . . yet.
