3. My son was one of the 247,000 who were laid off in July.
He applied for 4 jobs, got 3 interviews and was offered all 3 positions. He accepted 2 of them. He is a drug and alcohol counselor. He has to work 2 jobs to make up for the one. To be fair, however, his previous job was 2 jobs in one, but just working for the same place. He's a counselor at one job and an evaluator at the other which is a contract job where he is paid by the evaluation. So he's pretty much making the same amount of money. And it's a good amount of money.

I have to admit I was terrified that he was not going to be able to get a job and he would lose his home and he and his wife would move in. Dodged that bullet. :)

My sister-in-law was also slated to be laid off. She works at a public television station, however, they cut down on the number of layoffs.

Both of these jobs have one thing in common. They get government money either directly or through contracts and it was the Obama stimulus package coming through that saved them both.

Where I work they are adding temps like crazy, even though we were told to expect lay offs a couple of months ago. I'm now being told it is unlikely that I or anyone else in our group will be laid off. I am still keeping my fingers crossed though.
