66. If you don't mind my stepping in here ...
Having friends of different races neither makes you a racist, nor makes you not-a-racist. A person can be friends with someone who isn't white and still be a white supremacist. Heck look at slave owners who had sex with their slaves. They definitely didn't treat them as equals, but they may have felt completely comfortable confiding in them. In the slave owner's mind, the slave may have been "just like family." But do you really think the slave felt the same freedom to confide in the slave owner, to tell them what they really thought of being held as slaves?

There are a lot of religious men who have close friendships with their wives and feel they respect and love women - while at the same time being male supremacists who believe women are subordinate to men.

So the problem isn't having the friends who are women or who are black. The problem is jumping to that as a defense or excuse ("I am not racist, I have lots of black friends"). It shows that the speaker doesn't understand what racism is; that they believe it's only racism if you hate black people and refuse to associate with them.

Does that make sense?
