I have to ask myself how many kittens it was and how long he hit them. He did say something about making sure they were dead because he thought it would be cruel to see that they were still alive and just let them suffer as he drove off. That seems somewhat humane. How humane depends on the sensibilities of the person making the judgment. But I have a hard time judging others.
We don't have enough information to offer anything more than an emotional response.
