| 76. If you ignore the era, its issues, and its personalities, you can't understand LBJ |
|
It's true that many of the Texas Democrats in Johnson's time were rightwingers, and with Nixon's southern strategy many fled into the Republican party, because (being racists) they were irate about the Democratic Party stand on integration.
Johnson was not one of those racist wackos. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is, in a real sense, one of Johnson's achievements. Congress had repeatedly defeated efforts to pass such legislation in the 1950s, and the conservatives tirelessly labeled civil rights proponents communists. Johnson, fresh from Senate, was able to push the bill through. His commitment to civil rights and civil liberties was real -- and it was exhibited, for example, in his appointment of Thurgood Marshall to SCOTUS.
I don't see any reason to hold your view that Johnson would belong to the Republican Party today. Although the current Republican Party is far to the right of Goldwater, Goldwater was in many ways a rightwing extremist, and Johnson clearly distinguished himself from Goldwater.
