Eye care and dental is not covered, as well as mental health for those above the poverty line (programs for those below). But, there are exceptions, like, my wife gets free mental coverage for a year after having a baby.

For the most part, that which is covered are medical visits, medical procedures performed by doctors, and diagnostics/labs. No deductibles, no co-pays, etc. Yes, normally its from MDs or nurse practicioners, but midwives are also paid out as well as diagnostic workers (its more about having a billable procedure provided by an enrolled facility).

Now, for those who want mental coverage, they just need to purchase a supplemental private extended plan. Those can run around $100 bucks a month for a family (sometimes more/less).

So while the provincial insurance may not cover things, private insurance that does is incredibly cheap and normally provided by employers. When the government covers the most expensive procedures, it leaves the goodies pretty cheaply available, and who can complain about that? Even with the combination of public/private (for supplement), their per capita expense is drastically under the US
