The snobs base reactively fear art that is both popular and good because it goes against their self-identity as uniquely perceptive people that can know what is "really" good. Calling it "fascist" is not far off the mark because such cultural elitism is inherently authoritarian, hierarchical, and can be used to justify censorship and social engineering of culture.
