Like others have stated above, the store admitted responsibility when it paid for their hotel room. If the local Walmart is trying to screw them over, maybe someone at the corporate level could step in. I'm sure that they wouldn't want to take the chance of this turning into yet another PR blunder for their company.
That, and them contacting their insurance company, should get most of this sorted out. If it doesn't, then it would be time to contact a lawyer and take them to court.
