They have legal cause to sue and will win, if you're providing accurate facts.

Why would Walmart put them up, if not for the fact their negligence stranded the vehicle?

Unfortunately for your friends, it (legal action) won't happen over night. It won't even happen this month.

The first thing I'd do is contact my insurance company.

On edit...I agree with someone else about contacting the media. It's a good consumer investigation story for an aggressive reporter.
