59. Single Payer, Strategery, and Stupidity
If you believe single-payer is impossible but want something that begins to partially resemble it (a serious "public option") your best approach is to demand single-payer. You don't win a negotiation by asking for what you're willing to settle for. Why does our side never understand this basic fact? If you compromise before opening your mouth, you'll never have an opportunity to compromise, only the option of folding. but those who insist on compromising from the start should be nothing but grateful to those who do not and advance the same cause in a stronger way. For these two groups to waste energy arguing with each other is insanity.
