it is no different than your home network, just larger.

For example, your home internet connection has an IP address, for example, 214.178.34.21 at the modem.

you then hook up a router to share that connection to the internet to 4 computers, the internal IPs would be, for example:

192.168.0.2

192.168.0.3

192.168.0.4

192.168.0.5

(192.168.0.1 would be the router)

Each computer HAS to HAVE its OWN IP address ON THE NETWORK or the system wont work, it is not that hard to figure out which computer on the network is going where, almost any router can log access and each computer on the network has a unique MAC address (Media Access Control) allowing each one to be identified.

Additionally, all the school has to do is give each hardwired connection in a dorm room a static IP address on the internal network, and assign that to the user. Instant access to who is doing what.

edit: what school does he go to?

A few years ago the University of Michigan DID get letters from the RIAA, they fought in court against the RIAA and won, so did not give up the student information.

I think they used privacy laws to prevent giving over the information. I don't know if the school took any action against the students though.
