I think the overwhelming majority of people voting Republican based on faith never cared much whether the Republicans won. I also do not think they hoped to remake government or the country. The loudmouths and the religious right leaders like to present it that way, and the MSM repeats and repeats these ideas.

From talking to thousands of people what I hear most often is a disgust with politics, the lack of any left wing message being heard at all, and a sense that it does not much matter which party you vote for. That is a common sentiment with the general public, fundy or not, Republican voting or not. The thinking is that since there is no reason to choose one party over the other, that we are going to get screwed either way by the big wheels, that one issue, like abortion or guns, then becomes the sole determining factor, or else the "strong defense" appeals become the deciding factor.

But very, very few have any sort of political philosophy worked out in the sense that people here do, very few strongly identify with the Republican party or leadership, and it is child's play to overcome the Limabuahg Hannity nonsense and very easy to convert people to left wing politics. Unfortunately, hardly anyone is trying to do that.

People are c0onmfused and frightened, and have been seriously misled and betrayed by the leadership of the religious right. But, hey it is only a two minute prayer.

Another strong factor is not attraction to the Republicans, but rather antagonism toward Democrats, and your post is exactly the sort of thing that antagonizes people and drives them away from voting Democratic.

I guess it all depends upon whether or not we want to seriously analyze politics, or play Red Team versus Blue Team games as though it were a sports contest and we were merely fans cheering on our preferred team. Moist people in the general public, fundy or not, Republican voting or not, see that as childish and insulting and take the future of the country far more seriously. They do need to here a left wing message if they are going to move away from the Republicans, though, and "go Team Blue!" actually hurts more than it helps.
