Or, less judgmentally, "The War Between the State" is what the war was/is called here.

It was a civil war, the CSA never being recognized by the USA as a "sovereign nation,", but only seen as states in rebellion against the USA.

In retrospect, it might have worked out better if they had just been let go. Slavery would have fallen - a bit later but it would have fallen.
