69. The local United Way will never get a penny from me
I prefer giving directly to the specific local charities and organizations I wish to support rather than going through some over seeing group. That way I know my money is going to the causes I want to support and not to some that I do not agree with.

My MIL was a volunteer coordinator with another branch of the United Way and we had some lively discussions about my resentment of the organization. I just could not see basically forcing people being paid less than minimum wage (this was a state agency and exempt from minimum wage rules) to contribute money they clearly could not afford. One woman with five kids could not afford medical care for anyone in her family but they gave her such a guilt trip she was contributing $25 per month. She was downgraded in her work assessment for her poor clothing, but was still expected to give money away. That is NOT right.

UW may have changed in the years since, but I personally will never support them.
