Walter Mondale got his ass kicked by Ronald Reagan.
In my Congressional district, the Democratic challenger (if there is one) always get his (sometimes her) ass kicked by the Republican incumbant.
And I got my ass kicked when I ran for lieutenant governor of Boys' State.
Sometimes in politics, getting your ass kicked just means that you lose a popularity contest.
