I think a lot of it has to do with the same reason we see apathy toward other events around the world. Darfur and othe horrific human events are often pushed aside because they are in fact out of sight, out of mind. Many people, gay or straight, have a feeling that if it doesn't heave an effect on them or the way they live, it isn't a concern. No, you don't hear nearly as much about religious persecution of the gay community until it comes out and hits them with something like Prop 8, and with Islam not being widely practiced in the US as it is elsewhere, we certainly don't hear nearly as much about their intolerances here - it is all out of sight, out of mind. Occasionally we get the uproar over a news item in which someone is hung in another country for being gay, against Islamic law, but then it is quickly forgotten.
