to me the issue is not whether or not conservatives think of his reaching out to Warren as surrender, it is because to not do that is once again defining the line that separates us in America. He needed to do this because if he didn't, the other side would accuse him of partisan politics and contrary to his "inclusion" theme in almost all of his speeches.
As a martial artist for 25 years, winning a fight is rarely done by just barreling over someone. You need to use your opponents energy and momentum against them. I believe Obama is a much more skilled "fighter" than any of you give him credit for and this invitation to Warren is a way to take the wind out of the sails of the conservative side.
I predict that Obama will do more for the GLBT community than you can imagine, but this is a marathon not a sprint. The man has not taken office and people are already on his ass. Wait to see how this plays out.
