but Jim DeMint is partly right.

Unions are absolutely essential to make sure that there is safety in workplace, working conditions are healthy and that employees are not discriminated against.

However, when unions start negotiating wages and benefits that are beyond what the enterprise can reasonably afford in order to maintain viability, the unions go too far. Wages are determined by the marketplace and skill-level of the tasks. There is no reason to pay person X a higher wage than person Y of the same abilities and qualification just because person X belongs to a union.

High union wages increase product cost to the consumer and either a) people who don't belong to the union end up paying more for the products or b) the business becomes unprofitable and has to be shut down.

Lastly, the unions have utter despise for the investors and stockholders who make the enterprise exist in the first place. Without someone risking their money, there would be no jobs. However, the union people don't seem to want to reward those who took the risk to create the jobs.

Unless an enterprise is a win-win-win for the customers, workers and investors, it is doomed to fail. All three must share the rewards and risks.

On edit: You may call me a) a republican, b) a neocon, c) a retard, d) a libertarian, e) hater of the American worker, f) not belonging on democratic underground, g) an outsourcing maniac or h) a tool. You may save keystrokes just by giving lettered responses!
