figuring that the future costs would be paid for by????? Or perhaps they figured bankruptcy was the way out anyway.

Instead of putting aside money to pay costs on a current basis they paid themselves fat bonuses.

OK, management is under pressure to book profits and pay dividends. They did so by essentially falsifying the books by not figuring in real costs.

By making "fake" profits they removed the need to change.

Then along come the Republicans and say "Go ahead, break your promises (we do)!"
