-Governors should *not* be allowed to fill vacant senate seats MathGuy  Dec-09-08 10:55 AM   #0
  - that belief tells me you have no idea of why the Senate was created n/t  ProdigalJunkMail   Dec-09-08 10:56 AM   #1
  - Cronyism, nepotism, and corruption?  liberal N proud   Dec-09-08 11:04 AM   #2
  - right...  ProdigalJunkMail   Dec-09-08 11:21 AM   #10
  - Do you have any idea how many states do not allow the Governor to pick?  Winterblues   Dec-09-08 11:06 AM   #4
     - doesn't change why the senate was created... n/t  ProdigalJunkMail   Dec-09-08 11:20 AM   #9
        - Well, originally Senators were *never* chosen directly by the people  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 11:41 AM   #16
  - they are filled by special elections  LynneSin   Dec-09-08 11:05 AM   #3
  - There should be a special election even for the temporary replacement  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 11:14 AM   #7
     - That isn't necessarily the case  LynneSin   Dec-09-08 11:18 AM   #8
        - That doesn't seem like a perfect solution  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 11:22 AM   #11
           - Because it's alot of hassle to hold a second election and the turnout may be way lower than expected  LynneSin   Dec-09-08 11:28 AM   #12
           - Elections are a hassle, and do cost money, it's true  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 11:30 AM   #13
              - That's why we were smart in Delaware - appointed someone who doesn't want it after 2010  LynneSin   Dec-09-08 11:38 AM   #14
           - if the people picked the replacement- there'd be no need for another special election in 2 years...  QuestionAll   Dec-09-08 11:41 AM   #15
              - Yes- the six-year clock could restart  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 01:11 PM   #30
                 - no- it wouldn't "restart the 6-year clock"...the original senate term would stand...  QuestionAll   Dec-09-08 02:21 PM   #34
                    - So in NY I think it would make much more sense  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 02:30 PM   #35
                       - that may be, but it's not the way the law is, so it won't happen.  QuestionAll   Dec-09-08 02:32 PM   #36
  - What if only the sitting party held an election for the seat?  FLyellowdog   Dec-09-08 11:07 AM   #5
  - That's how we do things on the state and county level here in NJ.  pabsungenis   Dec-09-08 11:12 AM   #6
  - how would they determine who's in what party?  QuestionAll   Dec-09-08 11:43 AM   #18
     - Didn't know that. In FL we register by party.  FLyellowdog   Dec-09-08 11:59 AM   #20
  - Correction: They should not be allowed to auction-off Senate seats.  rucky   Dec-09-08 11:41 AM   #17
  - I will defer to states' rights on this one. It should be a matter for the people of each state  kestrel91316   Dec-09-08 11:54 AM   #19
  - Oh no!  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 12:02 PM   #21
  - Look up the origins of the Seventeenth Amendment........  suston96   Dec-09-08 12:35 PM   #22
  - That's a good amendment  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 12:41 PM   #23
     - Yep. Great. The part that bothers me........  suston96   Dec-09-08 12:55 PM   #24
        - The Constitution is an excellent document  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 01:04 PM   #26
        - Here in Wyoming  TransitJohn   Dec-09-08 01:15 PM   #32
  - Different states have their own rules, but the Constitution says the Guv appoints them  Bucky   Dec-09-08 12:58 PM   #25
  - As suston96 pointed out  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 01:06 PM   #28
  - apparently, Sen. Durbin agrees.  rucky   Dec-09-08 01:06 PM   #27
  - Well, it would be an absolute disgrace for Blago to make the appointment now  MathGuy   Dec-09-08 01:07 PM   #29
  - my suggestion: a temporary appointment followed by a special election  onenote   Dec-09-08 01:14 PM   #31
  - We have to hope, then...  Orsino   Dec-09-08 01:52 PM   #33
  - The amended Constitution actually requires states to fill vacant senate seats by election:  struggle4progress   Dec-09-08 06:07 PM   #37
