in the spirit in which they were given.

The fact that you have to assign all kinds of ulterior motives to an objectively benign phrase, and use it as an excuse to try to look clever about religion means you very much give a damn.

We're trying to have a society here, and if the good wishes of a stranger give you fits, I suggest you go live on an island with those fools who get in a twist when someone tries to wish them a "happy holidays" instead of "merry Christmas."
