25. I don't agree with your post there.
I worked retail in the 80s, too. Everyone wanted to be a monopoly. If Sears could have done it, they would have. K-Mart, all the others. I worked for a 40 store regional chain in a specialty market, and every managers meeting was about how to take over the market. That's nothing new. Not even close to new--that's always been the mantra of American business.

Walmart went after a rural market that the other major chains ignored, and that didn't start when Walton died. Because of the markets, they paid less and focused on lower prices, which was their market strategy for being viable in those areas. And compared to unskilled labor jobs in those markets, they paid fairly well--I've had several relatives work for Walmart. They do what they are allowed to do.

We should stop creating cartoon villains--especially out of organizations that many rural communities like--and start fighting the real battle. Fight what they are allowed to do.
