And with the current economic situation upon us, it'll get worse and something will have to be done.

In the case of your friend... basically she's using him for the rent, and he's using her for the bills. Like that never happened before. :) Nobody's going to cry over someone's unhappy, but mutally convenient relationship.

You say her family is abusive. Does that mean her father beats her up, or yells a lot and expects her to be home at a certain hour? You talk about your friend who got subsidized housing... did he get that because it's part of a school program? My guess is yes. There's a reason he qualifies. When you have a job, you're basically on your own. That won't ever change.

Plenty of people, who yeah, are obviously progressives, gave you some options to throw her way to improve her situation.
