5. I'm not sure sociopath is the right term.
As I understand it, a sociopath has no capacity for judging right from wrong. No conscience. They are therefore, in a sense, "innocent." They just don't get it.

I see the kind of person you are describing as evil, or to use Scott Peck's terminology, examples of Virulent Personality Disorder. They know exactly what they are doing, and are doing it deliberately. He also calls them "people of the lie" because they have mastered the art of deception, of hiding what they are. They adopt a pose of friendliness and moral rectitude, the better to disguise themselves. Many people find them charismatic, and so it is all too easy for them to rise to positions of power. I think Dubya is another example, as is Cheney. These are men who think nothing of murdering tens of thousands of people for no reason at all. And I think Palin is exactly the same.
