21. This has become a huge problem
Because there were a few midwifes in the Rio Grande Valley who operated a scam selling birth certificates, every single Tejano in the Valley is suspected of not being a citizen, even though the State of Texas issued them birth certificates and they have school and doctor records attesting to them living in Texas since early childhood. This is pure racism, connected to the Republican hysteria regarding Hispanic immigrants. It has nothing to do with Texas state law or practice, since Texas, from its independence onward, has always taken a practical approach to the citizenship of the state's Hispanic population. Essentially, the state has always assumed, unless shown early evidence otherwise, that Hispanics within its borders are Tejano, not foreigners, which is why Texas doesn't bother with contacting the Mexican consulate in criminal cases. This is over-reaching of federal power against state power, and any real conservatives should be as angry over this as liberals. Between this and the expropriation of lands by the DHS for its blasted fence, I expect there to be real fireworks in the Valley if the federal government doesn't back down. What a legal nightmare for individuals as well as the State of Texas. All courtesy of the jerk in the White House who is less a Texan than these Tejanos, knows it, and probably envies them for it.
