4. We get better results around here, at least in the inner city.
There is large support for Obama there, but the trick is getting them to the polls: turnout was 10% in 2004. But we can identify the supporters
and then work on walking them the few doors down to vote.

I'm just beginning working on the suburbs here - York Pa - and that will be tough. I just remind myself that this is why every single vote counts.
And I have changed McCain supporters minds when they get the facts on his voting record, etc.

The real reason we need to do phone banking around here is to re=establish a neighborhood Democratic base, which was totally destroyed about 10-15 years
ago with some kind of big scandal (I didn't live here then so I don't know the story.) All the Dems here feel like "I'm the only
Dem on my street", and that just isn't true. Dem v Rep registrations are closer to 50/50, with a tip to the Repubs, and a huge percentage are 'independent'.
Dems are always so relieved to meet other Dems, and it makes them more comfortable in talking to other people about the issues, instead of hiding their real
opinions. If they hide them, they can't convince anyone else.

That independent choice, as I have seen, comes from two basic perspectives: 1/ They are so disconnected they can't even name the two major parties ...seriously,
they don't know a party 2/ The redneck thing . . . like the young guys who tell us they'd love to be a sharpshooter for the Marines...somehow they view this as
a manly occupation, killing someone. I don't mean to knock the Marines, and we need their services, but it is different to be proud of protecting your country versus
wanting to kill people, which is what many young men here express.

The real difficulty is simply that people do not answer their phones anymore. But I have a great time talking to those who do. We need a permanent network to GOTV
around here. The Republicans are a machine at GOTV, hiring couriers like UPS to deliver updated sheets to the polls every 2 hours to track who has voted so far that
day. It's scary. And effective.
