52. from what I was able to find on google (not much), it's up to the individual state.
I know I've read that it's very common that autopsy is mandatory when somebody dies alone or if it appears to be a suicide. Also, clear cases of murder, or suspicious circumstances

better googlers will be able to find the law, but I'm guessing it's not mandatory in Maryland. I thought a family could demand one, and not have to pay.
