20. the more important issue is what the oil companies will do with whatever oil . . .
they are able to extract wherever . . . there is nothing that says they have to sell it in this country, and as multinationals they will export it to wherever they can make the most profit . . .

the whole issue of drilling is NOT about increasing the amount of oil available to US consumers . . . it's about increasing the amount of oil that oil companies can exploit for their own profits (which, as we know, are already of the record-breaking variety) . . .

  - Wel, He put quite a bit inside whales too...  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 04:28 PM   #12
  - There IS oil in some of that acreage, but it's not economic to extract it  Dreamer Tatum   Aug-01-08 04:25 PM   #10
  - Yes. If it takes 1.2 bbls to raise 1.1 bbl, it's probably not the most brilliant thing  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 04:29 PM   #14
  - Well, don't they want to pick some place off shore and basically drill at random? Also, it  EV_Ares   Aug-01-08 04:39 PM   #16
  - Well, drilling "at random" is pretty much what Dubya did with 4 different companies...  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 04:46 PM   #21
     - Yes which is what I am saying; they have all these thousands of acres they can look at first,  EV_Ares   Aug-01-08 04:48 PM   #22
        - Well, it depends on what you mean by "use" them! If there's no oil or gas  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 04:56 PM   #27
  - Then why are they leasing it?  ThoughtCriminal   Aug-01-08 04:44 PM   #
  - A lot of property is leased for something like a dollar per acre per year.  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 04:50 PM   #24
  - Maybe not but they have all those thousands of acres leased for drilling so they can go ahead and  EV_Ares   Aug-01-08 05:10 PM   #31
     - Not sure what you mean "lose it"...you mean forfeit the leases? If they do that, someone ELSE will  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 05:13 PM   #35
        - I am talking about what Pelosi and several other dem leaders said. They are leasing this land  EV_Ares   Aug-01-08 05:21 PM   #41
        - I guess I'll just have to risk being called a freeper troll but how is this any different  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 05:47 PM   #44

              - So you want someone to extract the energy...on public land...including the Alaska wilderness?  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 06:42 PM   #66
                 - Edited.  BalancedGoat   Aug-01-08 06:50 PM   #70
                    - No problem, I AGREE. They SHOULD drill in those areas as you suggest!  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 06:52 PM   #72
                       - Who said we were fighting?  BalancedGoat   Aug-01-08 07:08 PM   #81
        - It order to keep the leases the law would require "diligent development"  BalancedGoat   Aug-01-08 06:32 PM   #62
           - Okay, fine...your proposal will have to be a little more specific:  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 06:40 PM   #65
              - It's not my proposal.  BalancedGoat   Aug-01-08 07:00 PM   #75
                 - Oh, I realize that, but you were seeming to defend those provisions and you didn't address my  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 07:08 PM   #79
                    - I don't know the specifics.  BalancedGoat   Aug-01-08 07:21 PM   #89
                       - Turns out the legislation wouldn't define "diligent development".  BalancedGoat   Aug-01-08 07:29 PM   #92
                       - Well, aside from the impossibilit;y of defining "diligent development"  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 07:40 PM   #94
                          - The specifics would have to be hammered out.  BalancedGoat   Aug-01-08 08:01 PM   #98

                                - I tried to pare down the question so it was easy to answer.  BalancedGoat   Aug-01-08 09:34 PM   #104
  - Good question which is what I am talking about in another post. Besides how can you believe  EV_Ares   Aug-01-08 04:50 PM   #25
     - Anyone who believes them or their shills is an idiot. (nt)  redqueen   Aug-01-08 04:55 PM   #26
  - No, but you might be able to sucker some chump into thinking there's something in that hole,  fla nocount   Aug-01-08 07:48 PM   #96
  - I wonder how many Iraqi's have something in common with my Grandma, or will. n/t  fla nocount   Aug-01-08 10:33 PM   #111
  - Oh I know! The poor oil companies have only 68,000.000 acres available !  Overseas   Aug-02-08 01:10 PM   #113
  - I think big oil is sitting on that land to  blues90   Aug-01-08 04:22 PM   #5
  - I think so too. But little do they know how little land it would take to supply all our electricity.  nomorenomore08   Aug-01-08 04:25 PM   #9
  - Just how would that power be transmitted to where people live?  bamalib   Aug-01-08 07:16 PM   #85
     - They would pack it in styrofoam cooler boxes  2KS2KHonda   Aug-01-08 07:20 PM   #88
     - That was a hypothetical example.  nomorenomore08   Aug-01-08 09:39 PM   #105
        - In the real world neither wind or sun is reliable in most of the U.S.  bamalib   Aug-02-08 04:15 PM   #114
  - aren't most of the leases simply for the "mineral rights" to take the oil out of the ground.  QuestionAll   Aug-01-08 06:10 PM   #57

  - Too much logic in that question  tammywammy   Aug-01-08 04:40 PM   #18
