Well, a diner is one thing; not that the wait staff there don't work as hard (or harder) but there's kind of the social compact that you can sit in the diner drinking coffee until you sober up.

But wait staff (and line cooks, bus staff, etc.) get paid by the seating, and I've seen obnoxious people camp through not 2 but 3 seatings just sitting around and talking.

I'm a reasonable guy; I cut slack on some occasions: shitty weather? yeah, some lingering can be excused. And of course, a huge check, a huge tip, or being a reliable regular brings some slack with it too. But otherwise, it's inconsiderate to the staff and to your fellow customers who want a seat.
