exactly because I don't know anything about you.

And I don't consider what he said stupid at all, because it's a familiar metaphor to me and the meaning is obvious. Perhaps it's you who are in a minority for being unaware of its meaning. Google the phrase 'when did you stop beating your wife' and you'll get some 800,000 hits, so it's far from obscure.
