9. There have been many exonerated from death row who were there
and convicted 'beyond a reasonable doubt.'

One here in NC just released who was on death row for 13 years before DNA cleared him.

-Did anyone mourn Andrew Cunanan's death? babylonsister  Jun-25-08 11:09 PM   #0
  - What's the point of this post, I oppose the death penalty because we cannot undo death...  Solon   Jun-25-08 11:13 PM   #1
  - Do you mourn him? Was he 'eligible' to die because of what he did?  babylonsister   Jun-25-08 11:18 PM   #3
     - "Should he have been sent to jail instead?"  Occam Bandage   Jun-25-08 11:22 PM   #4
     - bullshit. He could have continued to kill people in prison  provis99   Jun-25-08 11:38 PM   #13
        - If he appeared to be a threat to other prisoners,  Occam Bandage   Jun-25-08 11:40 PM   #15
     - Why would I mourn someone I do not know?  Solon   Jun-25-08 11:22 PM   #5
     - Mistakes??  babylonsister   Jun-25-08 11:26 PM   #8
        - There have been many exonerated from death row who were there  Lex   Jun-25-08 11:28 PM   #9
        - I 'get' that; I live in TX, which is why I wrote that.  babylonsister   Jun-25-08 11:47 PM   #19
           - but "beyond a reasonable doubt" is the standard used in all criminal trials  Lex   Jun-25-08 11:48 PM   #22
        - But even those who are convicted "beyond a reasonable doubt" aren't all guilty...  Solon   Jun-25-08 11:28 PM   #10
        - Nowadays, that includes DNA evidence, when it didn't before.  babylonsister   Jun-25-08 11:49 PM   #23
           - Even that isn't foolproof...  Solon   Jun-25-08 11:52 PM   #28
        - "if a person is charged and convicted 'beyond a reasonable doubt.'"  Occam Bandage   Jun-25-08 11:29 PM   #12
           - DNA. Ya gotta love it; that's my standard, and to me, that's  babylonsister   Jun-25-08 11:50 PM   #25
              - ...and, again, "beyond a reasonable doubt" is the standard of conviction.  Occam Bandage   Jun-25-08 11:58 PM   #32
                 - Bottom line for me now, after not having DNA evidence for years.  babylonsister   Jun-26-08 12:22 AM   #38
     - Yes, he should have gone to jail  tkmorris   Jun-25-08 11:53 PM   #29
  - We should use the death penalty on people who won't be mourned?  Lex   Jun-25-08 11:15 PM   #2
  - No, but the self-righteous people on DU annoy me at times.  babylonsister   Jun-25-08 11:22 PM   #6
     - I agree there are people that appear not to deserve to live  MonkeyFunk   Jun-25-08 11:25 PM   #7
     - "There are some people who absolutely deserve the death penalty"  Occam Bandage   Jun-25-08 11:28 PM   #11
     - No additional benefit? How about satisfaction at destroying evil?  provis99   Jun-25-08 11:38 PM   #14
        - If that's what you're after, buy an XBox and smite evil all afternoon long.  Occam Bandage   Jun-25-08 11:41 PM   #16
        - Don't use moral arguments for or against the death penalty, they just muddle the issue...  Solon   Jun-25-08 11:43 PM   #18
     - It's self righteous to not support State sanctioned murder now?  bicentennial_baby   Jun-25-08 11:42 PM   #17
     - I didn't say that, so please don't.  babylonsister   Jun-26-08 12:03 AM   #33
        - Confessions can be beaten out of suspects, DNA can be planted...  Solon   Jun-26-08 12:05 AM   #34
           - DNA has never been involved before. OK, I have to run the risk that  babylonsister   Jun-26-08 12:15 AM   #35
              - DNA testing isn't perfect in itself, it evolved over 2 decades of experimentation...  Solon   Jun-26-08 12:20 AM   #37
                 - Sigh. I've pleaded my case. If you don't agree, that's okay. This is  babylonsister   Jun-26-08 12:34 AM   #39
                    - Perhaps not, but then again, you failed to present a reasonable case in any event...  Solon   Jun-26-08 12:43 AM   #41
     - I don't trust a government that can't build a levee or mend a pothole to decide who lives and dies.  LeftyMom   Jun-25-08 11:50 PM   #26
