Although the main historical points -- the battles, the marriages, the assassination of Caesar, the main historical points -- are based on history, there is no way the writers could actually know a lot of the interpersonal stuff portrayed. But yes, I find it endlessly fascinating, if sometimes tough to follow the large cast and all the different names.
