Our unseen enemy

'Meeting Resistance' delves into hatred of U.S. occupation

December 14, 2007
BY BILL STAMETS

When coalition forces invaded Iraq, the identity of the enemy was clear. In the far longer occupation of Iraq, the enemy is far from clear.

Photojournalists Molly Bingham and Steve Connors clarify who is killing Americans after Saddam Hussein's downfall. "Meeting Resistance," their first documentary, offers interviews with 11 individuals stating rationales for lethal resistance to foreign troops on their land. Although insurgents appear in other documentaries about Iraq, they are the only focus of this one.

Shooting from August 2003 to May 2004, Bingham and Connors furnish an invaluable look into the hearts and minds of an unseen enemy. The film opens with scenes of everyday life on the streets of Adhamiya, a neighborhood in north Baghdad. Iraqis wave to the camera. No Americans are in sight, until a tank invades the vista. Later, a U.S. soldier will fire a warning shot at the lens.

Interviews in a gym, beauty salon and a butcher shop reveal unanimous objection to American troops. "Any identifiable individuals are not known by the filmmakers to be active in the resistance," states a title at the beginning of the documentary.
