9. I think it's the winds that are keeping the smoke out of central San Diego
The winds seem to be blowing strongly in the north county, from east to west, and that's blowing all the smoke to Del Mar and out to sea. If you go to this page:

and click on San Diego, you can see where the smoke is going. We are kind of in a "window" here in the central part of the city. If there was a fire in El Cajon or Alpine we would get a lot of the smoke here.
