87. Bullshit
Many unsuccessful race horses are adopted. I know. I have met several of them. The old "glue factory" for the losers is bullshit stereotype. Some also go to other events like show jumping. Some go to stables for use as trainer horses. Some are stable ponies or companions for other horses. Some horses actually are better breeders than racers. Unsuccessful thoroughbreds usually can find a placement somewhere or other. The only exceptions might be some of the truly mean and nasty personalities but even then people make the effort to place them.
BTW- the ex-racehorse I knew and rode around one summer? The NICEST most placid horse I have ever met. And since they aren't successful many non-racing owners can afford to take them on as they come cheap as racing stables are often willing to take a low price to get a non producer out of their stables. Where in the world did you get the idea that unsuccessful horses are killed?
