122. My mechanic got his training through the community college system here
It costs a whopping $20/unit, so assuming one needs books, parking, materials fees and books and gets absolutely no financial aid (they'll outright waive tuition for low income people) costs are maybe $2500/yr at most (that's assuming crazily expensive books and no buyback option,) so $5000 for a typical 2 year auto program. Still a hardship, but not on anywhere near the same scale.

I wonder why other states don't invest more in education. A few thousand dollars spent turning a young low income worker into a higher income worker with a useful skill pays off both in that worker paying more taxes later and in a better society (and good mechanics are good for the environment too- keeping cars running well makes them more fuel efficient and less polluting.)
